What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It's the process of helping search engines understand your content — and helping users find your site and decide whether to visit it.

Google is a fully automated search engine. Crawlers explore the web constantly looking for pages to add to the index, and the vast majority of sites in the results are found automatically. You usually don't need to do anything except publish your site. SEO is about taking the next step: actively improving your presence in search.

Whether a search engine or an AI system shows your page comes down to three things:

  • Relevance — how well your content matches what the searcher actually wants
  • Authority — how trustworthy you appear to be
  • Structure — how easily a machine can find, read, and parse your site

There are no secrets that automatically rank you first. Following best practices makes it easier for search engines — not just Google — to crawl, index, and understand your content. That's the whole game.

Note: "SEO" also refers to a person. A search engine optimizer is someone who does this work for a living. You can do SEO and be an SEO.

SEO is about visibility, not rankings

The old model was simple: pick a keyword, optimize a page, climb to position one, hold it.

That model is breaking. Results are now personalized by who's searching, where, on what device, and on which platform. And ranking on page one of Google no longer guarantees you appear in the AI Overview or get cited by ChatGPT.

Semrush's AI Mode study found AI Overviews pulled from the top 10 Google URLs only about 67% of the time. Overlap between AI Mode and Google's top 10 was just 35% — lower still for ChatGPT.

Ranking well still helps: domains in Google's top 10 are far more likely to be cited by AI. But position one no longer guarantees a click, a citation, or a stable placement.

You are no longer optimizing for a position. You are building visibility that holds across every surface.


Why SEO is important

Two reasons, at the simplest level:

  1. Search demand exists and competitors are chasing it. People use search to find products, services, and information. Effective SEO means outranking competitors to capture that demand.
  2. The traffic is unpaid. Unlike ads, organic traffic keeps arriving month after month without ongoing spend.

The evidence that SEO still matters in the AI era:

  • Google reports that AI Overviews drove over 10% growth in the query types where they appear, in major markets like the U.S. and India
  • Semrush research found AI search visitors are worth roughly 4.4x more than organic search visitors by conversion — likely because they arrive further along in their decision
  • Rand Fishkin (SparkToro): over 20% of Americans are now heavy AI tool users, yet 95% of Americans still use traditional search engines every month, and 86% are heavy users

How search engines work

Four stages. Everything in technical SEO exists to serve them.

1. Crawling — how pages get discovered

Crawlers (bots, spiders) discover content primarily by following links. Google finds most new pages this way. XML sitemaps signal which URLs you care about.

To ensure crawlers can move through your site:

  • Use a clear, logical site structure
  • Link every important page internally — orphan pages (no internal links) may never be found
  • Maintain an up-to-date XML sitemap and submit it
  • Don't block important pages or resources via robots.txt or noindex
  • Use clean, descriptive URLs
  • Format links as standard HTML, not JavaScript-only
  • Avoid redirect chains and loops
  • Monitor crawl errors in Google Search Console

2. Rendering — how pages get generated

Search engines process HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to see the page. Ideally, Google sees the page the same way an average user does. If your site hides CSS or JavaScript from crawlers, Google may not understand your pages.

  • Keep important content and links in the rendered HTML
  • Don't hide indexable content behind clicks, hovers, or form submissions
  • Don't block CSS/JS in robots.txt
  • Use server-side rendering for JavaScript-heavy frameworks
  • Test with the URL Inspection Tool in Search Console

Location note: if your pages serve different content by location, check what Google sees from its crawler's location — generally the US. This matters enormously for MENA sites.

3. Indexing — how content gets stored

Not every discovered page gets indexed.

  • Return a valid 200 status; don't block with noindex
  • Publish unique content that satisfies a specific intent
  • Avoid thin, duplicate, or near-duplicate content
  • Use canonical tags to signal the preferred version
  • Internally link important pages
  • Keep titles and meta descriptions accurate

Check if you're indexed: search site:yourdomain.com on Google. Results means you're in the index. No results means something technical is blocking you.

4. Ranking — how order gets decided

Algorithms evaluate a wide range of signals to determine relevance, quality, and usefulness for a given query.

Google has confirmed these ranking signals:

  • Backlinks
  • Relevance (search intent)
  • Freshness
  • HTTPS (site security)
  • Mobile-friendliness
  • Page speed
  • Absence of intrusive interstitials

Results are also personalized by location, language, and search history.

You'll hear "Google uses 200 ranking factors." Google has never published a definitive list. Systems evolve constantly, signals overlap and shift in weight by query, context, user, device, and intent. There are likely far more than 200 — and no one knows the full picture. Google holds patents specifically to prevent manipulation and protect the formula.

The practical move: learn which factors you can actually influence (title tags, content quality, technical health) and work those.


How AI search works

AI platforms don't hand you links to sort through. They retrieve information and write the answer. Four rough steps:

  1. Query interpretation — an LLM reads the question to work out intent and context
  2. Query fan-out — one question breaks into several sub-queries. "Best tent for family camping during fall" fans out into capacity, weather resistance, and price sub-queries.
  3. Semantic retrieval — the system matches by meaning, not exact keywords. It pulls passages that answer the question even when the wording differs.
  4. Synthesis and citation — the model composes a natural-language answer and cites sources

Why this changes your job: query fan-out means you're not competing for one keyword. You're competing to be the best passage for a sub-question you never explicitly targeted. Semantic retrieval means keyword matching matters less and clear, unambiguous topical coverage matters more.

The three types of SEO

Think of it as a sports team. Content is your offense. Technical is your defense. Off-page is how you attract and keep a fanbase.

Two pillars are firmly in your control — you decide what content you create and how your site performs technically. Off-page is different: you can influence and earn it, but you can't control how people talk about your brand.

On-page SEO is fundamental to how AI search tools understand when your content is relevant to a question. Technical SEO makes that content easy to find and use. Off-page SEO shapes what your brand is known for. Together, the three increase the likelihood your brand is mentioned, accurately described, and recommended in AI search answers.

1. On-page SEO (content optimization)

Creating and improving content on individual pages so it's useful, relevant, and understandable to both users and machines.

It serves two audiences at once:

  • Humans — content must engage, help, educate, or guide toward action
  • Machines — content must be structured so search engines can read the code and understand the page

For people, make sure your content:

  • Covers topics relevant to your audience, where you have real experience
  • Includes the words your audience actually searches
  • Is unique and original — don't rehash what's already published
  • Is well-written and free of grammatical errors
  • Is current and accurate
  • Includes multimedia to break up text
  • Is better than the competitors currently on the SERP
  • Is scannable — subheadings, short paragraphs, bolding, lists, reasonable reading level
  • Carries E-E-A-T signals: accurate information, credible sources, clear authorship
  • Links internally to related content

On URLs specifically: parts of the URL appear as breadcrumbs in search results. example.com/pets/cats.html is useful. example.com/2/6772756D707920636174 is not.

On headings: semantic heading order is fantastic for screen readers, but from Google Search's perspective, out-of-order headings don't hurt you. There's no ideal number of headings. If you think it's too many, it probably is.

On images: place high-quality images near relevant text. If your page reviews yarn shops in London, embed the shop photo in the section describing that shop's location and review. This helps Google associate the image with context.

2. Technical SEO

Optimizing infrastructure so bots can efficiently crawl, render, index, and rank your pages. It also improves UX by making sites fast and stable.

Key elements:

  • Site architecture — a logical hierarchy; important pages reachable in a few clicks
  • Crawlability — no blocks from robots.txt, redirects, or broken links
  • Rendering — critical content visible after HTML/JS/CSS processing
  • Indexing management — canonical tags, noindex directives, XML sitemaps
  • Page speed & Core Web Vitals — loading performance, interactivity, visual stability
  • Mobile-friendliness — equivalent content and function across devices; Google indexes mobile-first
  • URL structure — clean, descriptive, minimal parameters
  • Structured data (schema) — machine-readable markup enabling rich results
  • Security — HTTPS, maintained

Group topically similar pages in directories. If you have more than a few thousand URLs, this matters. Content in /policies/ seldom changes; content in /promotions/ changes often. Google learns this and crawls each directory at a different frequency.

On duplicate content: it's not a spam violation and there's no penalty. It's inefficient — engines waste crawl resources on URLs you don't care about. Specify a canonical version if you can. If you don't, Google will try to do it for you. Copying others' content, however, is a different story entirely.

Strong technical SEO doesn't guarantee rankings on its own. But without it, even the best content may never perform.

3. Off-page SEO (brand and authority)

Strengthening credibility and trustworthiness through activity away from your site: backlinks, brand mentions, reviews, citations, branded search demand.

Backlinks act as votes. Ahrefs studied nearly a billion pages and found a clear correlation between referring domains and organic traffic.

Three ways to get them:

  • Earn — create assets designed to attract links: original studies, free tools, infographics, a genuine point of view
  • Create — add them manually to directories and resource pages
  • Build — outreach to people who can link to you

Common techniques:

  • Broken link building — find a dead page, ask linkers to swap to your working page
  • Guest blogging — write for another site, earn a link back
  • Skyscraper Technique — find heavily-linked content, make something better, ask their linkers to switch
  • Resource page link building — get listed on curated industry resource pages
  • HARO and similar — answer journalist requests, earn a link when quoted

Link quality beats quantity. A few links from relevant, authoritative domains placed in main content do more than dozens of low-value ones.

Beyond links:

  • Brand mentions — even unlinked. When respected publications discuss you, search systems become more likely to trust and cite you.
  • Branded search volume — rising searches for your name signals awareness and demand
  • Reputation management — monitoring and improving reviews and sentiment
  • Citation management — consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across directories

Where AI looks: Semrush found the sources AI tools cite most are community and reference platforms — Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, Wikipedia. Showing up genuinely on those platforms is now an off-page play.

How to do SEO: 5 core practices

1. Research keywords — and now, prompts

Keyword research is the analysis of search terms people use, so you can identify relevant queries and evaluate demand and difficulty.

The process:

  1. Enter industry "seed" phrases
  2. Filter by difficulty, traffic potential, or exclude terms you already rank for
  3. Pick the keywords that fit your site

The metrics that matter:

  • Intent — informational, navigational, commercial investigation, or transactional
  • Volume — average monthly searches
  • Difficulty — beginners should target the low end of the difficulty range
  • SERP features — which features appear tells you what the searcher wants

Then move to prompts. These are the longer, conversational queries people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Mode. Prompt research reveals what content you need to be cited by AI. This is the newest layer of the discipline and most competitors are ignoring it.

Understand search intent — the 3 C's. Look at the top-ranking pages and ask:

  • Content type — blog posts? product pages? category pages? landing pages?
  • Content format — how-tos? listicles? tutorials? comparisons? opinion?
  • Content angle — is there a common theme or selling point across the winners?

Intent varies dramatically by query. Interactive tools dominate "days between dates." Videos dominate "excel for beginners." Google interprets the motive and shows what the user wants.

Expect your readers' terms. Experts and novices search differently — "charcuterie" versus "cheese board." Anticipate the variation. But don't panic about covering every phrasing: Google's language matching is sophisticated enough to connect your page to queries you never used verbatim.

2. Create quality content

Match format to intent first. Someone searching "best tent" wants tested recommendations, not the history of camping. Then cover the topic better than the pages already ranking.

E-E-A-T is the framework Google's quality raters use — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness:

  • Experience — first-hand involvement. Did you use the product, visit the place, run the workflow?
  • Expertise — real knowledge, backed by credentials or track record
  • Authoritativeness — recognition as a go-to source others reference
  • Trustworthiness — accuracy, credible sources, a secure site. Google considers this the most important of the four.

E-E-A-T applies everywhere but weighs heaviest on YMYL topics — Your Money or Your Life — anything affecting health, financial stability, safety, or future happiness.

Important: E-E-A-T is not a ranking factor. Google has said so directly. Treat it as a description of what good content looks like, not a dial to turn.

As AI-generated filler proliferates, publish what a model can't manufacture: first-hand experience, original data, real examples, expert quotes, a genuine point of view. The same originality that makes content stand out to a reader is what makes AI systems cite it.

Also: delete or update content that's no longer relevant. Content pruning — removing what isn't ranking, converting, or serving a goal — is real SEO work.

3. Optimize on-page elements

These are fully in your control, which makes them the easiest wins available.

Work your keyword naturally into the title tag, meta description, H1, subheadings, URL slug, alt text, and body copy. Don't force it. Keyword stuffing reads badly, is against Google's spam policies, and won't rank.

Writing good titles: unique to the page, clear, concise, accurately descriptive. Can include your business name, physical location, and what the page offers.

Writing good meta descriptions: short, unique to the page, containing the most relevant points. The snippet is usually sourced from actual page content — so you control it either way.

4. Maintain technical health

Run a technical audit. Address errors first, then warnings, then notices.

SEO vs. SEM vs. PPC

The cleanest mental model: SEM is a coin. SEO is one side. PPC is the other.

  • SEO = organic results and clicks
  • PPC = paid results and clicks; you're charged per click on bid keywords
  • SEM = both

The terms SEM and PPC get used interchangeably in the industry. That isn't technically correct — SEM properly means organic and paid together.

One honest caveat: organic isn't "free." You invest time and money in optimization — you just don't pay per click.

SEO vs. GEO

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is optimizing for visibility inside AI-driven answer engines — Google's AI Overviews and Gemini, ChatGPT and SearchGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity.

GEO does not replace SEO. It extends it.

The two AI-driven discovery surfaces to account for:

  • AI Overviews in Google Search — AI summaries at the top of results, pulling from multiple authoritative sources
  • LLM search experiences — ChatGPT, SearchGPT, Copilot, Perplexity generating conversational answers from a mix of training data, live search, and cited sources

Different surfaces, different citation logic — but they reward the same fundamentals:

  • Clear, well-structured, factually accurate content
  • Strong topical authority and brand trust signals
  • Content that answers questions concisely and unambiguously

One thing to internalize: AI results are far more volatile than Google rankings. SEO and AI Visibility Consultant Bill Widmer, who tracks AI citations weekly, describes the pattern — the same page gets cited across ChatGPT and Perplexity one week and vanishes the next, and answers shift from one user and conversation to the next. What moves the needle is overall presence, not any single placement.

Practical implication: don't chase individual AI citations. Build the topical authority and structural clarity that makes you retrievable across the board.

Arabic and MENA SEO: what's different

Most SEO guidance is written for English-language, US-market sites. Several things genuinely change in the Middle East, and they're rarely addressed anywhere.

Crawler location. Google's crawler generally operates from the US. If your site serves different content by visitor location — a common setup for GCC businesses with country-specific pricing, stock, or landing pages — Google may be indexing the version served to a US IP, not the version your Riyadh or Dubai customers see. Check this in the URL Inspection Tool before assuming anything else is wrong.

Hreflang is not optional here. International SEO — correct hreflang implementation for multiregional and multilingual sites — is listed as a distinct specialty for a reason. Most MENA sites run Arabic and English versions. Get hreflang wrong and you get the two versions competing, or the wrong language served entirely.

TLD signals are weaker than most people assume. Google has been clear: the TLD (.com, .guru, .sa, .ae) only matters if you're targeting a specific country's users, and even then it's usually a low-impact signal. Domain keywords have hardly any ranking effect beyond appearing in breadcrumbs. If you're deciding between a .com and a country TLD, decide on business grounds — not because someone told you it's an SEO win.

Semantic retrieval favors Arabic content more than keyword matching ever did. AI systems match by meaning, not exact keywords — they pull passages that answer a question even when the wording differs. For Arabic, a language with heavy morphological variation where the same concept appears in many surface forms, this is a structural advantage over the old exact-match keyword model. Well-written Arabic content is now more retrievable than it was three years ago.

Local SEO carries the weight for service businesses. Clinics, law firms, real estate, hospitality — the map pack decides. That means:

  • Google Business Profile — complete, with name, address, phone, hours, photos
  • Reviews — encourage them; they build trust and can improve rankings
  • NAP consistency — name, address, phone identical across your site, social, and every directory
  • Local-intent keywords — the phrases people actually type
  • Local listings — regional directories and local sites, not just the global ones

Structured data is a MENA-wide gap. LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Review schemas are machine-readable markup that makes pages eligible for rich results and helps engines understand your content. Most Arabic service sites have none. This is the closest thing to free ranking real estate that currently exists in the region.

A note on the AI shift here. Google reported AI Overviews drove over 10% query growth in markets like the U.S. and India — evidence that AI surfaces expand search behavior rather than replace it. There's no equivalent published figure for MENA markets yet. Treat the direction as informative and the magnitude as unknown.


How to measure SEO success

An effective strategy is driven by business outcomes, not rankings alone. Ranking first for a keyword that doesn't contribute to revenue has little value — especially when an AI Overview answers the query in the SERP and supersedes the need to click.

  • Bing Webmaster Tools — crawl and index coverage.

Report at meaningful intervals against previous periods. Frequency depends on the site — monthly or quarterly is typical.

SEO is ongoing, not a project

Algorithms update. Behavior evolves. Competitors publish and earn links. Your own site changes — pages added, removed, redesigned, accidentally broken. Content that ranked becomes outdated. Intent shifts. Technical issues emerge after updates. Authority strengthens or erodes.

Rankings must be protected. Underperformers must be refreshed. Technical health must be maintained.

And your process should mature alongside it. Reporting gets clearer, workflows more efficient, prioritization sharper. What took weeks should eventually take days.

SEO isn't something you finish. It's something you manage.


How long SEO takes

Every change takes time to reflect on Google's end. Some take hours; others take months. In general, wait a few weeks before assessing whether work had a beneficial effect.

The realistic timeline: early improvements in weeks, meaningful results typically in three to six months, with competitive keywords often taking longer. Ahrefs surveyed over 4,000 respondents and landed on the same 3–6 month range.

It depends on the site, its existing authority, its backlink profile, and many other variables.

Also true: not every change produces noticeable impact. If you're not satisfied and your strategy allows, iterate and see what moves.


What not to focus on

Practices and misconceptions accumulate. Here's what Google has explicitly deprioritized.
